Q: How do I make the links within a syndicated post open in a new browser window?

    A. This is a bit complicated, because it requires digging into the actual contents of posts, and so you can’t do it with a simple edit to your WordPress templates. (Actually, if you really wanted to, you could do it by writing a custom filter that goes in the functions.php template file in your active theme. But this is really the sort of thing properly handled by a plugin.)

The easiest way to do it is to download, install, and enable an Add-On that will do it for you, such as FWP+: Open links in new windows.

Does that answer your question? If not, use the Talk page to comment on this post or contact me by e-mail for help. Be sure to describe what you are trying to do, and the problems you are running into, with as much detail as possible.

    1. Kevin,

Which links are you trying to get to open in new windows? The links to a post, back to its original source on the syndicated website? Or the links within a post? (That is, links elsewhere that the author of the original post included in her post?)

If you’re trying to do the latter, and you run into this problem, then the add-on might be failing to do what it’s supposed to do; if you could send me a URL for the site, I can take a look over it and try to do some troubleshooting.

But if you’re trying to do the former — which is what your comment seems to indicate — that is, if you’re trying to make the permalinks to the original post on the source website open in a new window — then that’s not what FWP+: Open links in new windows is designed to do. In fact, there is no good way to do that with an add-on at all. (The code in the templates that displays the link back to a post just isn’t run through filters at all.) To do that you have to edit your template files, as discussed in [[How do I make the permalinks for post titles open in a new browser window?]]

      Hope this helps.

    2. …that is, in some of my syndicated posts, I get a list of small articles, i.e. travel articles. I want to be able to make the permalinks go to my post on my site and then from there, perhaps, provide a link to the syndicating site. However, on at least two of my syndicated post feeds, I get a link off the category page for each article, that then takes me to the full, single article, which has no additional links to take me to the original syndicated article to take advantage of whatever the deal may be. So, visitors read about this great travel deal, but have no way to get to the deal, short of manually typing in the syndicated URL. Ex: [[http://www.bizplansuccess.com/archives/483]]

I can always set the master permalink option within your plugin to make ALL of my syndicated post’s titles point back to the syndicated source, but that is not the desire. The desire is: 1. to have the ability to do what I described above per syndication, not only globally as it appears to function now.

This way, I can have the masses navigate to my pages, see a list of articles created by the syndication, click on the article to leave comments if desired, and then from there, click on another internal link (not always provided by the syndication, apparently) to take the user to the originator.

This sounds a little convoluted, I know.

    3. I installed the fwp plugin, and the links within the post now open in a new window. However they won’t open to the original source.

I’ve tried changing the site-wide settings and changine the rss feed settings to “Resolve the URI so it points to:” the url provided by the source.

however it only tries to open relative to the local site.

      Any ideas?

    4. I installed this addon, and it opens in the new window. but now it’s not opening in the source url.

Have you seen this happen before. I’m using WP 2.9.2.

& when I deactivate the addon plugin, i still can’t get the links to open using the source url.

      Mark.

    5. i love feedwordpress but i really need it to do something that it isnt and im sure there must be a way.

      i want it to:

      1. pull in a feed
      2. make it link to the permalink so users can read the feed on my site

(i can do the above no problems, but this is where i fall down)

      1. i want the post page to THEN link to the original article (when you click on the title)

i have seen this asked on this forum and never responded to. please help.

      thank you

    6. Ok, here’s my problem – I tried using the FWP+ Open Links in New Windows plugin, but that makes ALL the links in the content open in a new window – I don’t want to do that.

What I want is, if the original post has a content link that has a target=”blank”, I don’t want that scrubbed out. My client has two blogs – I am populating one of his blogs with posts from another of his blogs. The problem is, if the original source blog has a post with a content link that has a target=”blank”, I need that parameter to stay intact when imported as a syndicated post in the other blog – but it’s not…that parameter disappears! Which kind of negates the point of the feed completely (the only way around it is to manually edit the post – well heck if I wanted to do that I wouldn’t need a feed – I’d just copy and paste the post to the new blog each time the old blog updated). So….any suggestions? And, just curious, WHY does FWP scrub that parameter in the first place? Why is that necessary?
