FeedWordPress 2009.0707: bug fix eliminates blank "Syndicated Sites" problem and fixes tagging widget
FeedWordPress 2009.0707 is now available for download.
This is a release to fix two bugs, one small and slightly irritating, and the other potentially very irritating, which resulted from changes to the AJAX interface elements between WordPress 2.7 and 2.8.
Let's start with the more irritating problem which you should be able to eliminate by upgrading to the most recent release:
- BUGFIX: WORDPRESS 2.8 AJAX COMPATIBILITY ISSUES RESOLVED (blank or truncated "Syndicated Sites" administration page): Due to changes in the AJAX interface elements between WordPress 2.7 and WordPress 2.8, several FeedWordPress users encountered an issue where the front "Syndication" page in the FeedWordPress administrative interface would come up blank, without the normal "Syndicated Sites" list and "Update" control, or sometimes wth the boxes visible but one or both of them truncated, with only the title bar. This issue should now be resolved: with the new version of FeedWordPress, the compatibility issue that caused the disappearance should be eliminated, and if boxes are shown with only their handle visible, you should once again be able to drop down the rest of the box by clicking once on its title bar.
Thank you to the many users who brought this issue to my attention, and supplied some very useful screen shots which helped me reproduce and track down the origin of the problem.
The second problem was with the Tags widget (found under Categories & Tags,
where you can set tags to be applied to all syndicated posts, or all posts syndicated from a particular feed). This was also the result of some rather capricious changes to the AJAX interface framework in WordPress 2.8.
- BUGFIX: TAG SETTING WIDGET FIXED. Due to changes in interface elements between WordPress 2.7 and WordPress 2.8, people using FeedWordPress with WordPress 2.8 found that the widget for setting tags to be applied to all syndicated posts, or all syndicated posts from a particular feed, no longer displayed "Add" and "Remove" buttons for individual tags. This issue has now been fixed, and the tagging widget should once again work more or less exactly like the tagging widget for individual posts in the normal WordPress admin interface.
Download and enjoy! As always, you have any issues with the release, or if there is anything that you would like to see included in a future release, please use the comments form or drop me a line to let me know about it.
Now that these bug fixes are out of the way, I have some ambitious plans for the next release of FeedWordPress, which I hope to be able to release by early August at the latest. Besides ongoing testing for compatibility with new releases in the 2.8.x and upcoming 2.9 branches of WordPress, I would like to implement a Category Mapping system, similar to the existing Author Mapping system, which would provide users with much more fine-grained, powerful, and sophisticated tools for controlling how categories or tags from feeds are imported into the WordPress database. As I have time to do so, I would also like to include some commonly-requested features, such as allowing users more control over how excerpts are generated and more precise control over the timing of automatic updates. And eventually I hope to be able to replace the aging MagpieRSS feed parser with the more robust, reliable, and flexible SimplePie feed parser that is now shipping with new releases of WordPress.
If you have benefited from the bug fixes that went into this most recent release, or if you are interested in making sure that powerful new features like Category Mapping can be developed for an upcoming release, please remember that it's your generous gifts to the project tip jar that make ongoing development and support for FeedWordPress possible.

Issues and Comments
I just installed this and it
I just installed this and it strips all of the "<" and ">" from the tags. You can see it here - http://www.carefreetrip.com/blog/view/travel-warnings/
How do I correct this so the HTML displays correctly? Thank you.
Same thing happening to me.
Same thing happening to me. The “<” and “>” are being stripped so instead of getting a word in BOLD, I get "bAcupuncture/b Therapy, on Federal Rd., b…/bbr a href=”http://news.google.com/news/story?ncl=http://www.newstimes.com/c…" as text.
It gets worse if tables are involved. "table cellpadding=”0″ cellspacing=”0″ border=”0″ width=”80″ align=”left” style=”margin-right:10px;margin-bottom:10px”trtd align=”center”a "
But regardless, this is a great plug-in. I appreciate you effort!
When the plugin pulls a new
When the plugin pulls a new syndication, it's putting it in the database without a date, is this normal? Is there a way to change it from the default 1969 date to today?
Follow-up from FeedWordPress developer
Christopher,
Could you provide me with the URL(s) of one or more of the feeds where you encounter the 1969 dates? I'd like to run them through my test servers to track down why that's happening. Normally what FWP is supposed to do is to use the current time when the post is first syndicated. I have a couple of suspicions -- either a bug in FWP's date handling, or else a problem with the feed itself that FWP is not handling as gracefully as it should. Having some good feeds to use as test cases will help me out a lot.
Thanks,
-C
The following seems to
The following seems to indicate there already is some way to display excerpts instead of complete posts?
"As I have time to do so, I would also like to include some commonly-requested features, such as allowing users more control over how excerpts are generated"
However, I haven't found out how to do that. I'd like to set a maximum length for the syndicated posts at www.ryskmosaik.net, and also get rid of the irritating empty squares that some feeds generate at the end of posts. Is there any way of doing that?
I upgraded to this latest
I upgraded to this latest version, and now my feed doesn't add new posts at all. When attempting to manually update feeds, I no longer receive any status messages on which blogs were updated and how long it took. It's just blank.
My site has been stale and un-updated since I upgraded 22 hours ago.
I'm also still seeing
I'm also still seeing syndicated feeds disappearing from the list on this domain - anything I add. The feeds still show in the normal Links view though. Also, it is not consistent - I have another site which is almost identical (theme, plugins...) except for keywords and that is working fine (except that the normal links also show in the Syndicated sites list). On both sites I uninstalled and reinstalled Feedwordpress because the original update did not fix the problem.
Another site built on a fresh installation of Wordpress with the latest version of Feedwordpress also seems to be OK with about 40 feeds.

Hi. First of all, I am very
Hi. First of all, I am very impressed by your plugin. The options are amazing, it works like a charm.
However, I am having a little problem with a plugin named WP-PostRatings. As somebody already noted, they have some problems when working together.
The problem lies in a widget to show a list of hightest rated posts: every single post in this list points to the same URL (of a post grabbed via RSS).
When working without FeedWordpress, WP-postratings works great. When FeedWordpress is activated, the list gets messed up.
I am using Wordpress 2.8, FeedWordpress 2009.0707, WP-postratings 1.5, and, just for register, Atahualpa 3.4.1 as theme.
Any idea? Have any of you guys already seen this kind of problem?
Thanks a lot!
Just adding a bit of
Just adding a bit of information: the Atahualpa theme comes with a "Popular posts" widget, and it suffers from the same problem the WP-Ratings widget suffers: all links point towards the same syndicated post. So, I think there is some problem in the way the syndicated posts are stored in my local database (something to do with the permalinks or something like this), but I cannot tell what problem is this, as I am not a programmer :( I will make some more tests and if I can figure something out I will tell you. thanks!
Still lists problems
Still regarding to the problems listed above, I've tested a lot of plugins that deal with post rankings, and all of them get screwed when used together with FeedWordpress. The symptoms are aways the same: when viewing the widget's list, all the links point towards the last post on the page's link (but the posts names are correct). When viewing the widget's list on a single post page or when viewing a single page, the lists just work with the right links.
So, unfortunetly, I think this is a Feedwordpress issue. Any light on this, please?
this is still an issue, please advise a fix
hi - I have this problem too with a Popular/Comments widget (woo theme). Can we please get an answer on a way to fix this issue.
Thanks very much.
Very strange! Today my site
Very strange! Today my site which had refused to store a feed in the Syndicated sites list at least 10 times is now correctly retaining feeds. The only "change" I made was to enter the feed again, for a manual update, as I had been doing a few times each day.
The feed is from a google news search. I am wondering if they have changed something.
I updated to new version, and
I updated to new version, and when setting automatic updates all feeds in "Syndicated Sites" page dissappeared! they are gone. I tried setting updates back to manual "only when I request", but the feed list didn't come back, it seems lost for ever, really anoying.
I am still using wordpress MU 2.7.1, would upgrading help solving this issue?
Thanks for this great plugin
Feeds are back. They were
Feeds are back. They were gone because they were not asigned to the new default link category "Contributors". They reappeared after manually asigning them to "Contributors" in Links section.
But now I have another problem: Automatic updates are not working, Feedwordpress thinks it is publishing because it says for example: "2 min. ago Ready for next update 33 min. from now", but nothing get published at all ??
Since upgrading to WordPress
Since upgrading to WordPress MU 2.8.1, I'm getting the following error every time I try to add a feed to FeedWordPress:
Diagnostic information HTTP request completed
Status 0: HTTP Transports available:
Any ideas? Is the plugin compatible with MU 2.8.1?
I think I found something
I think I found something relevant to the problem of feeds disappearing from the Syndicated sites view - in the "normal" Links / Edit I unchecked the "Keep this link private" box and the feed reappeared in the Syndicated sites list.
Also I have seen Ted's error a few times - in some cases it can be fixed by manually replacing "feed://" with "http://"
Also upgrading Wordpress downgrades Magpie. I'm not sure if this Magpie downgrade / re-upgrade is part of the problem, but my 2 fresh installs of WP 2.8.1 and FWP 2009.0707 are behaving better than my 2 older sites upgraded to these versions.
Best.
I am running 2009.0707 at
I am running 2009.0707 at http://www.seriouslysoccer.com. I set FeedWordPress up to retain links to the original and within feeds to point to seriouslysoccer. The first (manual) pull does exactly as it should. Subsequent automated pulls of the feeds do not use the syndicated permalink, they use the seriouslysoccer link. When I manually add the syndicated permalink to the template it comes up blank.
I am running 6 sites (seriouslysoccer.com; seriouslywine.com; seriouslyruby.com; seriouslygolf.com; seriouslymedia.com and seriouslymac.com). All 6 display the same behavior.
Some of the site publishers are starting to be upset with my linking internally (understandably) but I can't find the problem.
Help???

I fixed the problem myself.

How to disable automatic
How to disable automatic posting to main page in FeedWordpress
I have installed and am testing FeedWordPress and so far it really has worked brilliantly. I have configured multiple RSS feeds and they both publish to their respective categories as desired.
The one function I would like to change is the automatic posting to the main page. Both of the feeds in testing post to their categories AND to the main page.
I would like to exclude incoming RSS feeds from posting to the main page. Thanks!

I'm hoping someone can help me out with a couple of things with this plugin. It would be very appreciated.
I'd like to have a "tag" for each feed that will display a message like "This content courtesy of abc.com."
I'm using a magazine theme with excerpts on the front page with a thumbnail image. Is there a way to pull a random thumbnail image for each feed source?
I would assume custom fields would be used for these things but I'm clueless on how to implement that.
Can someone help a girl out? Thanks!
I tried changing http:// to
I tried changing http:// to feed:// and using the LibXML2 Fix plugin. No dice. Any other suggestions. Are other WPMU users using 2.8.1 having this same issue of not being able to add new feeds?
Hello. I'm getting an error
Hello. I'm getting an error with my RSS feed when validating: "This page contains the following errors: error on line 23 at column 48: EntityRef: expecting ';'". Is this a problem with FeedWordPress posts--it seems to be occurring on two of my sites with FeedWordPress installed? I'm using "?feed=rss2" to access the RSS--is there a file or location where I can use htmlentities() to escape the RSS content? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Feeds still not being added
As with all versions since .99 I find it impossible to add new feeds, even on clean install, with the Magpie upgrade, etc. Nothing I can do will let me add new feeds. Really frustrating.
Dave
I am unable to add new content, using eBay feeds
I am trying to set up an autoblog using eBay feeds which turn each feed item into a post. I am unable to get any items to post. I'm not receiving an error, but I am receiving the following verbage when updating:
" * completed in 1 second
Update complete. 0 new posts were syndicated and 0 existing posts were updated"
There are items in the feed and I have tested another feed on the site witch was able to create a post. I have searched high and low for the last 5 hours trying to find a fix for this and I have come up with nothing.
Unfortunately, if I can't find an answer soon, I'll have to find a different solution for the time being until this is resolved as my time is limited for this project.
I almost forgot, this is a fresh install of 2.8.2 and the newest version of the feedwordpress plugin.
Thank you in advance for any insights anyone can offer.
I am unable to add new content, using eBay feeds
Bcarter -
WordBay works well for adding eBay listing and is very easy to set up. You specify the number of items, minimum bids etc. in plugin config., then add the item keyword(s) in [wordbay] tags. See http://skidsteer.org for an example of how it looks.
(I hope you don't mind me mentioning another plugin Radgeek, but WordBay is specifically designed for this, and works well (I am not affiliated in any way)).
Best.
Getting illegal offset bug as well

Illegal offset type warning
Jeromy,
Thanks for the report.
I've identified the source of this problem and it should be fixed in the next release of FeedWordPress. (If you want to ensure that it will be fixed, you can download the Development Version of FeedWordPress for testing. The next public release is due out sometime in about 1-2 weeks.)
We've installed 2009.0707
We've installed 2009.0707 FeedWordPress on WPMU 2.8.2 and all the plugin configuration pages are coming up blank. I'll file a bug, but was hoping someone might have a quick answer :)
Errors after adding a feed
I have a fresh install of WordPress 2.8.2. I have only added a simple theme and one other plugin. When I activated FeedWordPress it informed me that Magpie was out of date, so I let it upgrade it. Then I added a xml feed and I got the following error:
It looks like others are having this problem as well.
illegal offset type
Getting the error code:
Warning: Illegal offset type in /home/account/public_html/foldername/wp-includes/rss.php on line 1459
Offending code section claims to be a fix to said error and is present in the latest magpie updated from FeedWordpress. Otherwise, everything runs just fine! Any advice? Thanks for your work.
Re: illegal offset type
Scott,
Thanks for the report.
I've identified the source of this problem and it should be fixed in the next release of FeedWordPress. (If you want to ensure that it will be fixed, you can download the Development Version of FeedWordPress for testing. The next public release is due out sometime in the next week or two.)
Strip HTML from Feeds
How can I strip html from the syndicated feeds?
In the future release it would be killer if you could set specific items / code to strip from specific feeds on a case by case basis. But for now I'd settle for the knowledge on how to strip in full.
Re: Strip HTML from Feeds
Dan,
Well, as a quick fix, you can edit your template files so that the post loop uses the following to display content, instead of just a call to
<?php the_content(); ?>The real solution would be an add-on module that allows you to set an option to strip tags feed by feed, or globally. (As with most filtering related features, I don't plan to add anything like this to the WordPress core, but I would be happy to see an add-on module to handled it.)
Anyway, if you're interested in the feature, I've created a Wiki page for the possible future add-on, which has information (and a pretty Flash widget) on how interested users can chip in to see that it gets developed.
How to save images from feed to my own server
Hi, thanks for this plugin. Working great! Only one thing I would like to know from you. Is it possible to save the images or other media from the feed to my own server, like to the wp-content/upload folder? Is it possible by using some custom fields for each feed depending on its image save path?
Since upgrade no posts are and error in plugin.php file line 166
Hello, when I try to check for updates from a feed I get this error

how can I solve?
Widgetising the plugin
Hi,
I have installed the plugin and currently successfully pulling news from 3 different RSS feeds. Great! really impressed by this app. All articles are created and listed in a Category page available from the main menu on my home page. No problem.
Now I would like to show the same list in a widgetised area of my home page. So, forgive me for my lack of PHP knowledge, but what code should I add in my home.php file between:
<?php if ( !function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar('NpAdv_Widget1_OD_NM') ) : ?>which I created in my function.php file, and the<?php endif; ?>statement?I couldn't find any options in the plugin WP admin interface to widgetise the plugin, and I also didn't find any threads covering this; but then again, I am a newbbie in need of help. I am a bit at a loss and some pointers would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Cheers,

500 Error from rss_ Cache
Every week or so, one of my FeedWordPress-drive aggregators starts throwing 500s. Every WordPress-driven page on the site does this, whether it's a public page or anything in the wp-admin hierarchy. The fix for this is relatively simple (though it required hours of laborious debugging to discover this): delete every option_name in wp_options that begins with "rss_".
From what I can gather, the purpose of those entries is to cache Magpie's output, so all that this is doing is clearing the cache. Now that I know to do this, I have a method of fixing this when it breaks. But, of course, it's awfully inconvenient to have to keep an eye on this site and have to fix it periodically; one must take vacations and live life away from the computer periodically, after all. I'm tempted to set up a cron job to just perform this cache-clearing every so often, but there's always the question when doing this sort of thing of how often it's necessary to perform this action, and whether the frequency of that job is really the length of time that one is prepared for one's site to be down.
Has anybody else encountered this? I'd be curious to know whether there's a simple explanation or fix for this problem, or if this is just going to remain a quirk of FeedWordPress/Magpie that I'll just have to tolerate.
Re: 500 error related to MagpieRSS cache in WordPress database
Waldo,
From your description, it sounds like this is a problem with WordPress hitting the ceiling that PHP sets for memory usage. (PHP throws a 500 error if that happens before the headers have been sent.) MagpieRSS's cache records are not extraordinarily huge, but if you have an awful lot of them, it can add up; and the basic difficulty is that WordPress is currently coded to load every single record in the wp_options table into memory at startup. When you clear the cache records out, that dramatically reduces the amount of memory being consumed at startup; over time, as FeedWordPress checks each feed and re-caches the results, memory consumption at startup gets closer and closer to the maximum again. That's my suspicion, anyway. Out of curiosity, how many feeds are you currently managing in FeedWordPress?
I need to think a bit about what the best solution is likely to be for your situation. (One thing that complicates it is that within about 2 public releases from now, I hope to transition to using SimplePie, which is now included with new releases of WordPress, rather than a hacked MagpieRSS; which means that I also need to investigate how WordPress is caching the SimplePie data to keep up to speed.) But let me know about the number of feeds you're managing, and I'll see what I can do to help you out.
I am having this same problem
Is there a resolution to this problem impending any time soon? I've got a large number of feeds that are being rolled up, and I'm hitting a 90mb memory limit due to this issue.
What is the downside to clearing out those rss_* entries from the DB manually or with a script?
local copy of images
Hi, This is a great plugin and the only auto blogger plugin that is actively developed. I'm planing to use it in my next project which is an aggregator. I tried the plugin and I noticed that the image is hot linked instead of storing a local copy. Is there any particular reason for doing this way ? If it is possible to save the image locally it would be of great help to me, because this will speed up my website and will be fair to the main websites as its bandwidth wont be waisted when each time the images are loaded on my website.
Thank You
the_excerpt()
Hi,
First, congratulations on this fantastic plugin. Having tried several RSS agregator before, this one is indeed by far the most powerful one...
I have one question, which I saw was asked before by Kalle but remained without an answer; yet, I would appreciate it if someone knows how to control the feed posts. In my WP theme, all category, archive and search templates use the_excerpt() to limit the output of all articles.
Currently, I have my feeds tested and displayed in a new Category "News Mashup II" (http://www.dombey.com/blog/category/news-mashup-ii/)(ID 44).
Yet, I have a problem with the display of results from feeds/posts and search results generated from that Category 44.
1 - If you look at the "News Mashup II" Category page, you'll see that the posts are posted in full, which is contrary to posts listed under some other Categories, for instance http://www.dombey.com/blog/category/marketing/. There the results are showed as expected and as dictated by the_excerpt argument in the archive.php file.
2 - If you do a Search on the site on any of the tags generated from those feed posts, I also get the full posts showed in the search result page. For instance do a search in the site on "mashable", and see all the articles listed in full. On the other hand, if you do a search on a tag that hasn't been generated from that Category 44, for instance "travel", you get the expected results as dictated by the_excerpt argument in the search.php file.
3 - The same result also happens when doing a search on Archives through the tabbed menu on the Home page. If you select "August 2009", you'll get the posts in Category 44 in full, and if you click on "Next Page", you'll get to posts not posted under Category 44, and which are displayed as per the_excerpt argument.
So, all seem to indicate that it's the way the plugin pull the feeds and generate the articles on the Category page. Therefore, the question remains: how can I control this so that the_excerpt() argument is also applied to those Category 44 posts?
Your feedback would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
Joelle

RSS feeds in Parent and Children Categories
Hi everyone,
Would you be able to think of any reasons as to why a rss feed post, posted in a Children Category ONLY, would be posted as well in the Parent Category (of the said Children Category) too, where the Parent Category was NEVER selected/ticked?
Many thanks,
Cheers,
Joelle,
GOT THE ANSWER: It's a Wordpress feature. Sorry for wasting digital real estate.
Permalinks
Radgeek,
When I changed the permalink option on my blog to contain the post name instead of the post id I get internal server errors when clicking on syndicated posts. The permalink for syndicated posts does not have punctuation removed from the post title like the other posts which is the cause of the internal server errors. What can I do to change the slugs and permalinks to exclude punctuation upon publishing?
Thanks,
Adam
'feedwordpress_hardcode_name'
Hi and everybody,
I wonder if anyone could help with this...
In my current single php file, I currently use the "the_author_posts_link" call to return the name of the author with links to his/her other posts. However, some RSS aggregated feeds names are using an (almost) undecent :) amount of text for their names, which makes the name of the author (when there is no real person's name to the post, like in feedzilla).
So instead, I thought I could use the_author type of calls, but the results was identical. Then I turned to wp_list_bookmarks which contains a shorter name version of those long names, but I could not isolate just one name and instead always returns the full list.
So, I turned to the plugin in, and "Feed Information" admin area where the feed name can be changed. There I found the coding, which change the name. I have tried most call arguments but to no avail; hardcode_name, $list, etc..
So, what I am asking is, what shoulbe the php call statement to return that shorter name:
Anyone can help please?
Many thanks for your feedback.
Cheers,
Joelle

custom fields
Is there a list of supported rss fields that FeedWordPress will import to Wordpress beyond the RSS standards? My purpose is in adding a custom field to the incoming rss feed (i.e. image url) and assigning it as a custom field post by post (i see how to do this for each feed). Thanks for your great work.

How to make post appears in a new windows after clicking on its title link?
What key and value shall I use under the Customs Post settings?
Thanks.

araneumnet,
I just added a couple sections about rewriting link targets to the How Do I ...? section:
Let me know if these answer your question, or if you need any further help.
update_feedwordpress=1
Just curios how to troubleshoot a not working ?update_feedwordpress=1 ... Only getting a blank page and feeds are not updated at all. Even enableing debug mode shows nothing. Any hints?
Dealing with WordPress Memory Overloads
To deal with the problem of wp_options filling up, I've come up with a ghastly hack that I mention here in case it's useful to others. I set up a cron job that fires every ten minutes. It uses curl to grab the front page of my blog. If the byte count is the same as the server's 500 error page, then it deletes every row from wp_options where option_name like 'rss_%'. Problem solved.
Like I said: ghastly. But it allows me to step away from my computer for more than 24 hours without my sites going down.
Using get_feed_meta outside the main loop
Hi there, I'm not sure if this post is being sent twice, hope not.
I have succesfully added some custom field settings to the feed, and could retrieve properly the value using get_feed_meta inside the Loop.
Unsuccessful, outside the Loop.
Is there a way to enable get_feed_meta outside the Loop?
Using get_feed_meta outside the main loop
Yes! Digging into WP code, I have discovered that involved functions need the global
$idto be assigned. So outside of the loop, just define and assign current ID from custom loop, for example:
I believe this can be done ONLY outside the loop because if done inside, it would spoil the loop management itself.
< and > being stripped out
I've still never seen a response from the author about the < and > characters being stripped out of syndicated posts. It does not happen on all RSS feeds, only some, but I need a fix for this urgently.
Same issue here
It happens on some rss feeds, but not all. All feeds that I'm using validate correctly.
Reverse duplication problem
I have an odd issue. One of the feeds I use duplicates their GUID, and this results in multiple posts being treated as one. Each one updates the previous, so I end up with only the content of the last post. Is there a way I can bypass this so that each of their posts ends up as one post on my blog? I've notified them, but they don't understand what I'm trying to point out.
Server's 500 error page - @Waldo/@Radgeek,
@Waldo, @Charles/Radgeek, @any one who can help,
Hi - I am experimenting exactly the same problem I think, and I have a 500 with a site that suddenly disappeared 3 days ago. Not knowing what was going on and by elimination process, it became apparent that FeedWorldPress was at fault. And I think it's the same problem as you had, in relation to the way it's handling Magpie and the caching process.
I followed what you (@Waldo) did to fix the issue, namely
Unfortunately after deleting all the 'rss_' files via phpMyAdmin, the status of the site was kindda identical: When FeedWorldPress is activated, the site times out and/or returns a 500. When FeedWorldPress is deactivated, the page loading and rendering go as far as the first <?php if (is_syndicated()) : ?> call is made and stops right there, leaving a partially rendered page. When rechecking wp_options, several 'rss_' files were already created, so FeedWorldPress was still pulling the feeds, but that didn't translate into a displayed feed content.
After attending to the 'rss_' point, I of course cleared the cache. I also deleted the plugin and reinstalled it, but to no avail. The site behaviour remains the same (as described above).
I currently have 75 feeds set up. All worked well (until that 500 that is). I run on the latest WP 2.8.5 update. I also have WP-Cache installed as a plugin; would this also be a source of conflict/problem, although when I deactivating/reactivating it, it doesn't seem to affect anything?
@Waldo: I saw a subsequent post, where you wrote you set up a cron job. I understand what this is but have no idea on how to go about it, nor the code required to write that cron job. Maybe you would be kind enough to explain that to me too, please? Though, I am not quite there yet, since deleting the 'rss_' files didn't return my site as it was before.
Any advice as to what my next step(s) should be? I am a tad desperate now...
I am not so much of a tech person and I have to learn as I go along, so I apologise if my questions sound trivial to you. And your help would be much much appreciated - hoping you guys still read this forum and/or anyone else who can help...
Many thanks,
Cheers,

Cron Job
Joelle, I'm afraid that how to set up a cron job is perhaps a bit more technical than I'm prepared to explain here. Suffice it to say, a cron job refers to a program that performs a task on a repeating schedule. It involves mucking around on the Unix command line, although your website host may provide a clever web-based interface to do this. In the instant case, it's running a command-line browser to load that URL. I'm dimly aware of some websites that will do this for you (here's one).
cron job: Thanks for the feedback Waldo
Thanks for the feedback Waldo. I guess I was simply trying to replicate the cron solution you implemented to manage the RSS_ load on the wp_option file. Was hoping to be able to do that from the cron.php file and add some code there, but it sounds like it's not the way to go about it...
In any case, thanks for replying to me. Most appreciated.
Cheers,
Joelle
Update Bails
I've got an exciting new problem. With every update of the feeds, my server kills the process after it spins out of control, using more than 100MB of memory. Often it's updated just one feed when this happens. I haven't figured out the cause yet, but I figure it's worth calling up.
Question about FeedWordpress
Hi! Thanks for a wonderful plugin. I have some questions (if they are already answered on your site, please point me in the right directon):
1) I use the "Similar Post" plugin. Whenever a new post is submitted this plugin finds related posts. But this doesn't happen when using FeedWordpress. Are the posts submitted by FeedWordpress submitted in a different way than ordinary posts? If so, could this maby be improved in the future?
2) I'm unable to find a setting for the time between updates when I've selected "Check for updates: Automatically". What is the default time? Would it be possible to change this value?
3) "Authors who haven't been syndicated before: Will have a new author account created for them". Exactly what does this setting do? Are there any security implications by doing this? Is it possible to have the author name to be the name of the syndicated blog? How?
I've searched for answers for these questions, but I haven't found anything. I'm sorry if they've been answered before.

If I already invoke

500 Error after upgrading to 2009.1111
Hi,
So here we go again... Yet another 500 error after upgrading to 2009.1111, which crashed my site.
After upgrading from 2009.0707 to 2009.1111, I noticed that although feeds were still being pulled (from the plugin admin section), new posts were not being updated on the site itself. By the time I realised that and started to look around as to why, the site crashed in a big bang with yet another 500 error.
If you look at previouos posting I did on this forum, you'll see it's not the first time this happened. The first 500 error was eventually fixed by my ISP, by reinstalling PHP in my hosting package. Pretty drastic, right?
I again cleared all the RSS_ files from the wp_options file, cleared my cache - all to no avail.
I deleted the FeedWordpress plugin completely. My site was available again and loaded until it met the first <?php if (is_syndicated()) : ?> call on the home page. I expected that; and at least I could see something from my site.
Then I try to roll back to the previous version of FeedWordpress and went back to download 2009.0707 from Wordpress download area, uploaded it and installed it successfully; but when it came to activate it, it threw me another 500 error.
I then noticed that the WP plugin dashboard was prompting me for an upgrade of this plugin to 2009.1111, which I did as I had nothing to lose at that stage. Unlike 2009.0707 which refused to activate, 2009.1111 did activate, but the site did revert to a 500 error mode [or a 1460 timeout (it varies - sometime it's a 500, sometime it's a 1460)]
I then deleted it all again, and the home page went back up, rendering up to the first <?php if (is_syndicated()) : ?> call.
So, it seems pretty evident that FeedWordpress is the cause of the 500 error and no other plugins.
My site is heavily based on FeedWordpress to work properly. When it does, it does all the things I want it to do - it's a breeze and I love it. But the risk of it crashing the site seems to be very high, which is not a happy thing as I waste many hours trying to figure out what's going on, bothering a lot of people for help, and not to mention having a site down for many days...
So, please please please... I implore someone, anyone to help me find a solution/fix to this...
@Charles - What's going on?
Hope to hearing from you...
Many thanks,
Cheers,
Joelle
Auto update deletes all feeds I setup
Hi, When using the WP plugin update feature for feedwordpress plugin, it deleted the feeds I setup :-(
As I have an WP MU setup with different 14 bogs each using different feeds, I was not happy to have to redo all these again, and every time we need to update the plugin.
Can you look into this please.
Many thanks
Upgrading to 2009.1112 also didn't help
Upgrading to 2009.1112 did not help in restauring the site as it was previously. 500 error is still very much alive...
Cheers,
Joelle
Ping functionality
Would it be possible to implement some kind of ping functionality. Some of the blogs that I syndicate would like to ping me (manually or automatically) when they have posted new content.
Also, it would be nice if the system could stop the automatically fetch a feed every x minutes, if the blog pings automatically.
Stripping out undesired markup?
Thanks for a great plugin!
Is there a facility in Feedpress to strip out undesired markup? Some syndication sources add a bunch of garbage to their posts, that I don't want clogging up my user's experience.
Imagine some slick regex would do it, but I'm a regex monkey, so any help is appreciated.
Noobish Feedback
I'm having some fun with FWP. I do wish there was something a little more like a forum or a Yahoo mailing list with a paste bin for users to share their discoveries. For instance, the Custom Post Settings >Key >Value> Action, looks really interesting but I don't understand what it's for. Would love to see some examples. And it was an example in a comment that taught me how to use the Attribution Boilerplate. (Tried to post it but couldn't get it to display as code, only as a live link) I'm having a problem where, probably because it's a non validating YouTube feed, the Remove Duplicates plug-in thinks I've already imported the new stuff. Anyway, thanks for all the work RadGeek, I was hanging out with SimplePie, but when they announced they're not going to support it (that could change, someone else might take it over) I found you.
It is a very cool plugin, no
It is a very cool plugin, no doubt. And agree that this plugin very much needs a forum.
Today, there is really only these comments (meager faq aside) and with this site's layout, it's a bit of a trial to find & use. For example, this plugin is not in the WP Codex for some reason. Why is that? They have a built in forum for plugins, but it is not used for this one?
As for your Attribution issue, i cannot say without seeing the code, but it sounds like maybe a case of strings not being escaped? Not saying anything about your knowledge, but escaping strings is one of the fundamentals with PHP, you need to "escape" text to differentiate between it being code or just a string. Solving such issues can be daunting at first, because the rules are designed to be very flexible and as a result one method doesn't always work; it depends on the context of the code.
Another issue I noticed with feedpress is that rewriting a posts title only applies on the blog page, which makes any sort of "latest posts" on all pages appear inconsistent; titles show with the rewrites on the blog page, but no where else.
Another rewriting issue have seen is that rewriting titles rewrites all list items on the blog page as well. So if I add text to post titles, that text is added to any list on the page, which is obviously unusable.
Still working through it though. I'm sure there are solutions, however combined with the lack of a user forum, working them out is a slooooow process.
Broken on 2.9.1
I can only access the syndication page, every other page says insufficient privileges. No other plugins are activated
