FeedWordPress 2008.1214 fixes known compatibility issues with WP 2.7, fixes a couple bugs, and polishes the interface a bit.
FeedWordPress version 2008.1214 is now available for download.
The advent of December has seen the release of WordPress 2.7, and I've been working to get out a new release of FeedWordPress before I leave to visit family for the holidays, which incorporates the couple of small compatibility fixes. In addition, I've added some interface improvements (to help FWP look a bit less out-of-place in the new user interface), and a couple of fixes of bugs reported or detected in the process of testing.
Also, I created a cheesy little logo icon for FeedWordPress to fit in with the general practice in the WordPress 2.7 interface. It's not actually intended to be a distinctive logo for FeedWordPress (it just takes a syndication icon and the WordPress logo and puts them together), but it should at least visually mark off the FeedWordPress configuration interface from the rest of the Dashboard. Hope you like it.
First things first, though. A WordPress update has come out, which has caused a number of e-mails -- just like every WordPress release does --from people who upgraded WordPress to the latest version, and, in the process, inadvertently downgraded their MagpieRSS to the old, busted version included with WordPress. If you have noticed strange problems with syndicating feeds (especially Atom feeds) immediately after making the upgrade, like those described in my old post about upgrading to WordPress 2.5, then you need to re-copy the MagpieRSS upgrades from your FeedWordPress installation to the wp-includes/ subdirectory of your WordPress installation. (The old post discusses this issue, and the steps for fixing it, in more detail.)
Now, then. Here are the major changes since the release of FeedWordPress 2008.1105:
WORDPRESS 2.7 COMPATIBILITY: FeedWordPress has been tested for compatibility with the newly released WordPress 2.7. WordPress 2.7 has deprecated the Snoopy library for HTTP requests, which caused a fatal error for users who had not installed the MagpieRSS upgrade (or whose installation of the MagpieRSS upgrade was overwritten by a recent update of WordPress). FeedWordPress now handles things gracefully when Snoopy is not immediately available. The 2008.1214 fix also releases a minor interface bug experienced when changing link settings under WordPress 2.7. (This was the result of some new caching features implemented in 2.7.)
INTERFACE SPIFFED UP: Interface elements have been updated so that FeedWordPress's management interface fits in more naturally with the WordPress 2.7 interface (including a new logo and a number of small interface tweaks).
BUG WITH TAGS FOR SYNDICATED ARTICLES FIXED: Several users encountered a bug with the option to add tags to all syndicated posts under Syndication --> Settings -- if you told FeedWordPress to add more than one tag to all syndicated posts, instead of doing so correctly, it would add a single tag instead, whose name was composed of the names of all the tags you asked it to add. This bug was the result of nothing more dignified than a typographical error on my part. It has now been fixed.
MORE INFORMATION AVAILABLE WHEN FEEDWORDPRESS CAN'T FIND A FEED: When you enter a URL for a new syndication source, FeedWordPress uses a simple feed-finding algorithm (originally based on Mark Pilgrim's Universal Feed Finder) to try to determine whether the URL is the URL for a feed, or, if the URL points to an ordinary website rather than to a feed, whether there is a feed for that website. All well and good, but if FeedWordPress failed to find a feed, for whatever reason, it would typically return nothing more than a nasty little note to the effect of
no feed found,
without any explanation of what went wrong. FeedWordPress now keeps track of error conditions from the HTTP requests that it uses in the course of looking for the feed, and so may be able to give you a bit more information about the nature of the problem if something goes wrong.
Enjoy! As always, you have any issues with the release, or if there is anything that you would like to see included in a future release, please use the comments form or drop me a line to let me know about it.
Also, I know that there are a couple of issues that some users have already reported that have not yet been addressed in this release. (For example, I haven't yet been able to investigate the issue reported by Scot Hacker and mn, as well as some private e-mails. I'm hoping to investigate this issue over the next couple weeks in order to discover what's going on and how to fix it; if I can catch it in action, then I should be able to push out a release either during downtime on my winter vacation, or else shortly after New Years'.) In any case, please remember that your gifts to the project tip jar make ongoing development and support like this possible.

Thanks - appreciate the rapid response to 2.7. I am still not getting tags from the Moveable Type Atom feed I am trying to use. comes through as a category OK but does not come through as a tag. Any ideas? Thanks JT
I install this new version,
I install this new version, however no matter what I do, can not get anything to work. I try to add a feed, and I get a "could not open a handled fopen()" error, I try to change the settings and I get a "Are you sure" error. I really want to get this plugin working, here is the feed I'm trying to use http://gfcs.homelinux.com/rss2wp.php?category=Recent .
Any ideas, clues, anything to get this working? I enabled full debugging and couldn't find any errors being reported in FWP.
Thank you for your time.
The new version fails on my
The new version fails on my feeds, too - same errors with Grant's. Are there any library dependencies missing? Also, I noticed that it doesn't log to stderr anymore...

Hi,
First of all I have to thank you for this plugin. However, I'm having one problem with it. Sometimes, my site crashes with the following error:
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 32243712) (tried to allocate 14941645 bytes) in /wp-content/plugins/feedwordpress/feedwordpress.php on line 2374.
I'm trying to figure out if this is only on the syndications' metadata but I think you use the settingstonotes on the poll function, and I can't find out how to solve the problem :s
First I want to say thank you
First I want to say thank you for your great plugin and for rolling out 2.7 compatibility so quick.
Unfortunately though with 2.7 and the latest update to the plugin some of my Permalinks are not going to the proper location. I have them set to go to the Original Website but a few of them are going to the main site (network.idano.net).
Not all the links from those individual sites are going to the aggregated site but just a few of them (on page one). I did not see any individual settings for feeds or posts so I am not sure how to fix this.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi. Greetings from Portugal
i´m testing the feedwordpress and it´s amazing. I have a question.
How it´s possible pu in the end of posts a "Source Link". I dont wanto the source link in title of post because if i made this it´s not possible the users make comments. I hope you understand me and sorry of bad quality of my english.
A great huge and thanks in advance.

We're having some issues with
We're having some issues with it too. Several feeds have already had to be deleted and re-added to recognize new posts, but we don't know if that actually fixes the problem. The only commonality between them seems to be that the sites use Feedburner but we were using their non-Feedburner feeds (which wasn't an issue until this latest version.)
Thanks for any help.
Thanks for this great plugin!
Thanks for this great plugin! I have one issue I was hoping you could help me debug and determine if the problem is in the FWP code or something I am doing.
The problem is I aggregate and import several feeds to use as fodder for my blog. These go into the Pending Review queue in Wordpress so that I can see if its something I want to talk about, re-write, or use as a basis for a blog post of my own. The problem is that if I take one of these, change it (making it my own) and then publish it... the next time FWP pulls in updates for the feed, it stomps over my newly published re-written version of the post with the original source post. Literally the new post is completely gone from WP and the old post is there in its place.
How do I keep this form happening?
prevent overwriting published posts
Jason,
I've been struggling with a similar problem. The FeedWordpress duplicate finder plugin helped, but had other issues. Finally I discovered a simple solution: on published posts you want to protect, simply change the time stamp to anything later then the original feed. Now FeedWordpress will leave those items alone.
I'm having some problems with
I'm having some problems with some amazon feeds. Feed example: http://www.amazon.com/rss/tag/books/new?length=15&tag=associateid-20
Inside the feed are various links to amazon which are also tagged with the associate ID. On some occasions feedwordpress malforms the url's, it drops all the info behind the ? char.
Example of url inside feed: http://www.amazon.com/tag/travel/ref=tagrssrsitdpitemat?encoding=UTF8&tag=associateid-20&creative=381421 In the syndicated post the url comes out like: http://www.amazon.com/tag/travel/ref=tagrssrsitdpitem_at
It does not always do this, sometimes the items are processed without malforming the links.
Anybody with an idea?
Hi, Part of my problem turns
Hi,
Part of my problem turns out to be a problem with Wordpress 2.7, which doesn't send the content length for null posts, effectively rendering wp-cron useless when serving under lighttpd. As far as I understand, the bug has been scheduled to fix, but it will take a long time :) So the solution is either switch to apache (oh my...) or use manual fetching.

i am also having the "HTTP request error: Could not open handle for fopen()" error.
@Jason Hart, I experience the
@Jason Hart, I experience the same problem. On our site, we add tags to incoming items, but all newly added tags get wiped out, when FWP "updates" items. How can we keep the best from two worlds : Keep updates (i.e. original publisher added tags) and not destroy the tags or categories which has been added to the syndicated post in the meantime? Or in your case, protect an item entirely from item "updates"?
Thank you for the great plugin and for keeping it up to date!
"protect" manually edited posts
Morten, I've been struggling with a similar problem until I discovered a simple solution: on published posts you want to protect, simply change the time stamp to anything later then the original feed. Now FeedWordpress will leave those items alone.
Sorry, It doesn't have Save
Sorry, It doesn't have Save Button in editing of Syndicated Sources !!!!!!!!
There is definately an issue
There is definately an issue here - at least on my site: I think I pinned it down to Feedwordpress not creating or associating the catagories properly...
It seemed when i added a feed it tried to create a new catagory or was not associating properly with the previous catagory.... ex: contributors... it was not listed on the drop down list of catagories - but only a catagory number was...
So I created a new catagory - then on an : showed up in the drop down list - but when i associated it with that : in the list it seems to be working again and the syndicated list shows up again..
Very strange..
Try reassigning catagories in settings and see if that will cause it to start functioning again...
Got another one for you
Got another one for you :-)
When I syndicate "search" feeds from an online service such as Twitter Search and feeds contain identical items, FWP doesn't seem to recognize them as identical, and publishes both. The strange thing is that one always have permalink, which points to the current URL. (i.e. "http://domain.com/page/4/" or similar.
Usually feeds from blogs don't have this problem, as posts are never identical when they come from different sources, but if one aggregates feed items like this, I get this issue. Just one to tumble on with.
You did a good work, but with
You did a good work, but with PHP5 magpierss seems that doesn't work :S look here my problem if in a post there is: google it returns a href=http://google.it google a because this function xmlparseinto_struct seems don't work..
What do you think about ?
Is it possible to set the
Is it possible to set the amount of posts to parse ?
I only want one article per feed posted, instead of all of them.
Could I otherwise change the coding somewhere in feedwordpress to make this happen?
Thanks :) Great plugin :) best wishes
Can I show only a few lines
Can I show only a few lines of the syndicated post and then have "read more" going to original article?
This is a great plugin and it
This is a great plugin and it is functioning well on our site. However, is there a way for the imported feed posts to open in a new window to the source, versus the same parent window?

I've been using this plugin
I've been using this plugin for years :) and really like it. But, since this last update - some weird things have been happening to my templates, that I can only conclude it is this plugin (I could be wrong). But - when you go to my site - the last post you see is one that was imported via RSS .. (do you see husky post?)
But that's not the last post.
Hi, I love your plugin, but I
Hi, I love your plugin, but I have two quick questions.
First, wondering if there is some hard-coded limit on the amount of feeds?
I currently have 34 feeds I'm currently polling and am no longer able to add new feeds to poll, however the existing feeds are updating perfectly fine.
I'm able to curl and get the feed from the server, so I know I'm not being throttled. The exact error is a name lookup timout, which is very odd (as above, existing feeds poll and update fine, and I can reach the RSS feed from the server via other means):
Error: I couldn't find any feeds at http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/13.atom [HTTP request error: name lookup timed out]. Try another URL
Any ideas on this one?
The above issue appears
The above issue appears resolved, somehow duplicate keys were appearing in the database, cleared out db and started from scratch. Working fine now.
This brings me to a few more questions.
1) Staggered updates Is there a way to stagger updates in order to decrease load and increase "content freshness"? I have ~50 feeds I'm polling and no matter how I try and manually stagger them, after several updates, all feeds align and poll at the exact same time, causing high load and unresponsiveness for a few seconds as the feeds poll. If no, is there a way to disable the "re-poll on visit" setting and simply rely on a manually set auto-polling time? (Is setting CRON jobs the answer here?)
2) "Ready for next update every 40 minutes" Where is this value of 40 minutes come from? I've set auto-check to 10 minutes, however every feed is showing next update every 40 minutes. Is there a way to edit this update interval?
3) WP-Cache Have you experienced any problems with WP-Cache and your plugin running at the same time?
Thanks in advance for your plugin and help, love it so far!
Mike did you get any fix for
Mike did you get any fix for issue #2? I'm having the same problem and posted a request for help. If I can't get this feed program to update faster than every hour I'll have to look elsewhere for a rss-poster plugin.
Hello, feeds of feedburner
Hello,
feeds of feedburner are not working properly.
for example, this newspapper use feedburner feeds and they not work properly with feedwordpress.

i do not manage feedwordpress
i do not manage feedwordpress to be active by default in my mu install.
I put the whole folder in mu-plugins : do not work
i tried to put only the main php file in mu plugins and other files in standard plugins folder and it does not work neither
for mu install also, how to make feedwordpress options only accessible to superadmin ? and not every blog admin ?

Error: I couldn't find any feeds at http://www._________.com/ [HTTP request error: connection failed (4)]. Try another URL
I only encounter this problem with blogs hosted on wordpress.com. Blogger and self-hosted WordPress blogs seem to be doing fine. I'm using WordPress v2.7 with FeedWordPress 2008.1214 :)
Using WPMU 2.6.5, PHP5.2.6,
Using WPMU 2.6.5, PHP5.2.6, MySQL 5.0.51
For some reason, my admin user on a wpmu site is no longer allowed to add a syndicated site in my personal blog. I have triple-checked everything, upgraded from 2008.1105 to 20081214, and the issue has not resolved itself.
Is there anything I should be looking into?
Also, how would one setup an actual crontab to run the wp-cron updates.
Reporting a bug in the newest
Reporting a bug in the newest version - I believe you introduced the old bugs with feeds not saving to user accounts (in wpmu). I can't save a feed to actually syndicate, and the script sees the feed. I am using WPMu 2.6.5, PHP%, etc.
This was working for me a week ago. 2008.12.14 didn't help.
Any suggestions?
I have used your website and
I have used your website and installed on my new mortgage blog. Thanks very much your site was very helpful, although i am new to this and still trying to get my head around feeds for wordpress, in fact the whole thing about feed RSS etc. I need to spend time looking at this. Thanks

I am having a issue with comments. With the feeds I am using the #comments link is appended to the end of the link for comments. How can I work around this and have the link go to my site for comments?
Thanks
Charles, thank you SO MUCH
Charles, thank you SO MUCH for restarting development on FWP. We were lost without you and starving for a similarly mature and awesome aggregation platform. Nothing compares to wp+fwp, especially for those already skilled with WP.
I just made a donation and I hope it helps keep you motivated. We are a non-profit and having access to FWP is worth far more than we could ever afford to pay, but I will continue making donations in the future that hopefully make a difference.
On a seperate note, it would be great to have a bugtracker where us users could post bugs, help each other fix bugs and post proposed patches. It would make it a lot easier for you to keep it all organized and would avoid the insanely long comment threads on these update posts. Have you considered just setting up a google code account?
Thanks, keep up the great work.
It appears the html code from
It appears the html code from RSS feeds is getting parsed at text on my site (same URL as email if you want to check). I copied the MagpieRSS but it didn't help. Everything else seems to be working fine. Is there anything else I'm missing?
If it gives you any clue, < and > seem to be missing but I got no idea how to fix it, for example instead of it shows a href="" /a

@jason: Look at the end of the announcement post:
"(For example, I haven’t yet been able to investigate the issue reported by Scot Hacker and mn, as well as some private e-mails. I’m hoping to investigate this issue over the next couple weeks in order to discover what’s going on and how to fix it; if I can catch it in action, then I should be able to push out a release either during downtime on my winter vacation, or else shortly after New Years’.)"
Radgeek IS aware of the problem and trying to solve it.
I have the same "this issue" problem on my installation:
HTML tags from some feeds (I only see it on the blogger.com/blogspot feeds) show up with the actual tags replaced with HTML character versions: < and > are replaced by < and > -- this makes the tag for example appear as <br> in the post.
I tried to upgrade from WP 2.6.x to 2.7 (and yeah, I did replace the rss.php "for new hotness" again) and that makes no difference. I am not sure if there is some problem with the PHP configuration or the radgeeks PHP code or what's actually going on... but I do hope a solution "turns up". Because I don't get it. WordPress itself loves to do strange things, but the feedwordpresspreservesyndicatedcontent and feedwordpressrestoresyndicatedcontent filter trick is supposed to pass whatever the feed provides directly on. As said, I don't get it, but I hope someone else figures it out. :)
Oh, one more little
Oh, one more little detail.
Great plugin!! One request:
Great plugin!!
One request: Is there anyway to include parsing of plain-text URLs?
For instance, aggregating Twitter feeds, posts them as plain-text, when many updates on Twitter get reposted including URLs for instance: http://bit.ly/xxxxx or http://is.gd/xxxxx
For whatever reason. fopen()
For whatever reason. fopen() is pissy. Install Curl or some alternate HTTP transport mechanism if you are having the fopen() issue, and you'll be fine.
@Rich, thanks that does fix
@Rich, thanks that does fix the fopen() problem.
Now that just leaves "Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again." problem.
Hi! I'm using FeedWordPress
Hi!
I'm using FeedWordPress as an RSS reader. I think I have 75-100 blogs updated from it now.
But, some of my friends keep switching blogs. So, the old ones gets left outdated.
Is there possible to sort the list of syndicated sites based on when the last update took place? That way I coud easily bulk update the "abandoned" blogs, and save server load and time by not checking them.
(Alternatively: Could FeedWordPress automatically adjust update time based on update frequency of the RSS? If one blog updates once a month, that blog doesn't get checked as often as the blogs updated every day?)
I FINALLY found out why the
I FINALLY found out why the feeds from blogger / blogspot / a few other sites turned up with the HTML tags displayed instead of used with WordPres/FeedWordPress.
And guess WHAT?
It turns out that FeedWordPress not WordPress are involved with this bug.
It is actually a problem with libxml2 which is described in bugs such as
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249703
On Gentoo Linux this bug disappeared when upgrading to
dev-libs/libxml2-2.7.2-r2 dev-lang/php-5.2.8-r2
Jeremy, I wanted to thank
Jeremy,
I wanted to thank you for the contribution. It is extremely helpful and it will definitely allow me to spend more time on FWP support and development this month.
As for a bug tracker: I actually have some fairly specific plans for tricking out FeedWordPress project web space, which would (among other things) include a more orderly issue-tracking system. Nothing I'm ready to talk about much in public just yet, but there's a non-zero probability that you may be seeing an announcement before the month is out.
First of all, great
First of all, great plugin!!
Most of my syndicated sites use FeedBurner, and I'm using WP 2.7 on the site containing the FeedWordPress plugin. It seems one of 2.7 new classes is having trouble with them (WP_Http), for they all have redirection to their feedburner feeds and this class is not handling redirections well yet.
In the rss.php file you distribute, function "fetchremote_file", I switched back to Snoopy and everything went OK.
Can you make an "official release" where 2.7 still uses Snoopy? You know, deprecate it in a greater version when this issue gets resolved?
Oh, forgot to mention, feeds
Oh, forgot to mention, feeds with no redirection (raw WordPress RSS feeds) were already handled with no problems for me using the new API.
One more thing I
One more thing I remembered! While troubleshooting through the code to find a fix, in class FeedFinder, function find, I realized something that could improve the performance a little bit: just before iterating the $html array as $u, do an array_unique on this var. It got me from 60 addresses to 4... Sorry for the "spamming"!
Is there any reason the
Is there any reason the Hooray!!!! Cron-less auto-update uses
which will start FeedWordpress updating when some users visit the site, which means that they don't get the page before the update is finished when an update is triggered? Is there any reason that FeedWordpress does not use the shutdown hook
so that pages, when users trigger an update, is served first and then the update is done? There may be good reasons, I don't know, I'm just wondering.
I've also found that the "update" function will really overload the server while it is running, which makes new pageloads while it is updating slow. I have found that by adding a sleep the server gets a way lower loadaverage. Is there any reason feedwordpress can't sleep a while before the endforeach in update?
Awesome plugin, thank you for
Awesome plugin, thank you for developing it. I have an issue that's come up - I have an external blog that I aggregate into another blog with your plugin. Two posts that have been up for more than 1 week will not import. I had some website problems (500 errors) that may have caused the problem, but now they appear to successfully update, however these last two entries don't import.
Is there a way to force an update? Adding a feature to clear out the posts that have been imported and re-import them would be neat.
Sorry I forgot to tell you
Sorry I forgot to tell you that I'm using WP 2.5 and FeedWordPress 2008.1214
When I use the rss.php
When I use the rss.php included in Wordpress 2.7, it appears to work but does not import ANY entries. Says the process took 0 seconds.
When I use the newest rss.php included in the plugin, I get the error "MagpieRSS: Failed to parse RSS file. Mismatched tag at line 21 column 7"
What do you think??? I really need this fixed, and I have no idea where to go next.

It does not seem to work (anymore?) with blogs hosted at wordpress.com. For example, http://vetneuro.wordpress.com/. Others show the same. RSS feeds show up nicely in safari. It's at feed://vetneuro.wordpress.com/feed/
This is with latest wordpress and latest feedwordpress.

Well I have had to give up. I still can't get tags to show from MT blogs (a real pain) but the persistent problems caused by dates is killing me. I pull a post in as pending (because I need to edit the tags) and publish it. Next time the syndication engine runs it pulls the post in again and resets the whole post - I lose any edits, tags etc AND it vanishes from my blog. Can't have that so I have turned it off Pity as it seemed like such a good idea
Thanks for developing this
Thanks for developing this great plugin...
Only a quesiton: despite "the_excerpt" function built-in wordpress, there's a way to syndicate only excerpt for each feeds? I would not like to syndicate the whole content of the rss but only an excerpt for each blog, in this way fwp did not create duplicate of the entire original post. Is there a edit or code mod to place somewhere?
Thanks for your time, i'm running wp2.7 and last fwp
P.S: Bad english, my fault. :D
The new updates seem to have
The new updates seem to have messed up the original source URL. I've used Wordpress' $post->guid and FeedWordpress' thesyndicationpermalink().
Both returns the URL of the Aggregator, not the orignal URL of the article. The settings are set to use the URL of the original source.
Please see http://www.mindanaoblogs.com to replicate bug.

Could somebody help me?
Would it be possible to pick
Would it be possible to pick posts from only one or two (or a limited number of) categories in the feed. For example I would like to be able to publish links to my friends posts that he has put in a specific category but not the rest of his posts.
Now I would need to create a category to my own blog named exactly the same way as my friend has named his category, and then I would be able to say to FWP to throw away all other posts but save ones that has the same category as I have in my blog. But then if my friend has any other same category names as I have, also posts in those categories would be saved and published. That would be a mess.
I would like to pick posts in one of his categories and save them to the category I have specified.
If I get enough energy I might try to implement this feature my self :) But that code would look rather horrible after my modifications.

Re: displaying only excerpts
Re: displaying only excerpts instead of whole posts, I burned the feed with FeedBurner and enabled the Summary with 300 characters in the Optimize tab at FB. I use that feed in FeedWordPress. It works perfectly. See my above-linked blog for an example.
However, I've started having a problem especially after I updated to WordPress 2.7.1. Self-hosted blogs display fine with title, specified categories, and an appropriate excerpt. But with Blogger and WP.com blog, only title and categories show up and the excerpts are blank. Any idea why?
All feeds used are re-burned using FeedBurner.

The new updates seem to have messed up the original source URL. I’ve used Wordpress’ $post->guid and FeedWordpress’ thesyndicationpermalink().
Both returns the URL of the Aggregator, not the orignal URL of the article. The settings are set to use the URL of the original source.
Please go to www . mindanaoblogs . com to replicate. Or click my name above. Thanks.

I'm noticing a problem with permalinks back to the source as well. Importing of posts works fine once you put in the new Magpie RSS php files but if the url for the original source has an ampersand in it (&) they get dropped. So if the blog your importing is not using search engine friendly urls, then links to the post from your blog or rss feed won't work.
I noticed this because one of the feeds I import is from a Joomla install that does not use search engine friendly urls and is full of ampersands for variables.

Here's the solution to the
Here's the solution to the "are you sure" problem:
RadGeek says, "The problem has to do with some code that FeedWordPress uses for a (rather minimal) security check, under certain conditions (e.g., if your browser isn't sending an HTTP Referer header). The problem will be fixed in the next public release of FeedWordPress, but in the meantime, you can put in a quick fix by pulling up each of the PHP files in your FeedWordPress directory, searching for lines with the following:
And then disabling the check by commenting out the line:
Then save, re-upload anything you need to re-upload, and hopefully the problem should be fixed."
And I pulled up each of the PHP files and found that the only three that need the line commented out are:
authors.php syndication-options.php syndication.php
but there are multiple instances of checkadminreferer(); in the files, so make sure to comment out all of them.
And thanks for the solution and awesome plugin, RadGeek.

I'm now ready to cry. I labored through writing a Filter for Feedwordpress yesterday, and it was working. I swear it was working! I updated Wordpress to the latest version, then had to go back and fix Magpie and now my $post_date variable is returning nothing...
Not sure how nice this will format but here goes: addfilter('syndicateditem', 'filteroutold');
function dateDiff($dformat, $endDate, $beginDate) { $dateparts1=explode($dformat, $beginDate); $dateparts2=explode($dformat, $endDate); $startdate=gregoriantojd($dateparts1[0], $dateparts1[1], $dateparts1[2]); $enddate=gregoriantojd($dateparts2[0], $dateparts2[1], $dateparts2[2]); return $enddate - $startdate; }
Basically I only want to syndicate/update posts that have been added in the past week...Please PLEASE someone help!
function filteroutold ($item) { $postdate= date('m-d-Y',$item['datetimestamp']); $todaydate=date('m-d-Y'); //echo "post date" . $postdate. "today:" . $todaydate; if (datediff("-",$todaydate,$post_date)>7) : $item = NULL; endif;
return $item; }

FWIW, reserved characters aren't being encoded as HTML entities in the "Link Name" field. A blog named "A & B" appears as such, rather than with the & encoded as the amp entity. I've been seeing many have issues with this plugin, most from what I've seen most likely has to do with them not replacing the updated rss files for wordpress or they are on some shared host that really isn't made to handle importing mass feeds mostly due to time outs and memory.
I've used a few versions of this now and each one of them worked just fine. And the proof of this is at my sites, yes I not only do one site with feedwordpress but a few in a wordpress mu installation.
The plugin is absolutely amazing in many ways and I thank you for creating this masterpiece.
A few suggestions down the road could be have an all-in-one place to add/edit and publish the feed faster, I might even edit the files to redirect to the newly made feed versus the syndication page now that I think about it. I hate having to find my feed in the list to go back and edit the feed once it finds it. Also I got quite a huge syndication list of feeds now which takes some time to load, any way for this to be numbered pages? Another thing I need to do. Only issue I see latest version is that my tags seem to post, but I do not see them in the wordpress tags cloud for some reason. Works in previous versions.
What you made is really amazing, It fascinates me still after all this time when I fetch a new feed.
Thanks again and keep up the excellent work.

Great plugin, have been using it for a while now to upload my Google Reader new feed into my Wordpress site.
But after upgrading to the latest Wordpress version (2.7.1), Feedwordpress does not pull the content snippet of the Google Reader news item anymore (the "item-body" part that used to go into the body of the wordprress post). Also, the post title is now a combination of "item-title" and "item-info". The latest Feedwordpress version (2008.1214) works great with Wordpress 2.6.1, but not with version 2.7.1.
Has anybody run into a similar problem? Or any thoughts on how to fix this?

Gabriel, The short answer to
Gabriel,
The short answer to your question is, no, FeedWordPress does not delete past syndicated posts when they drop off of the feed. Posts remain in the WordPress database unless and until you should decide to delete them yourself; if you don't touch anything, the posts will stay there as long as your blog does.
Hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any other questions about FeedWordPress.

Where are answer to all our
Where are answer to all our problems?
I have WP 2.7.1 and FeedWordPress doesn't point the syndacate_permalink to the original link but to the post itself of my blog!
And if I use code like this one [code]

Ok, I'm here again. I've
Ok, I'm here again.
I've shaped a bit the usage of this great plugin.
1) First of all, the majority of the troubles disappeared when following the magpie update instructions. This should be pointed out, it was misleading because it looked like it was an old FWP problem, but it's still there.
2) One question: how does the plugin copes with UTF-8 content feeds like chinese and japanese?
3) It looks like sometimes there are some duplicates. I cant understand if this id due to the plugin or bad feeds. For example have a go with: http://us.acer.com/acer/rss.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&sp=page13&ctx2.c2a... The strange thing, that makes me believe it could be a feed problem, is that although coding into the plugin a duplicate check function, still some duplicates are posted....
4) My proposal is to add two new custom fields: - one for the feed language (two characters like EN, DE, FR, ES, ZH) to make it easy just let users write the value or place a drop-down list with the languages; - one for the feed source name: let the users code the proper content. Those fields would appear into the plugin's form "Feed Finder" that shows feed data before confirmation
5) Would be nice to have an option to delete all feed posts from one feed, WITHOUT deleting the feed source; let the plugin rebuild the posts later
6) Why does the plugin re-creates deleted posts? Say the plugin creates automatically a post you wish to discard; you delete the post, and once the feed is update the posts is there again. You could set an option to enabledisable update of past posts?
7) I'm missing how tag creation is done. Is there a way to build tags automatically?
8) Another tip: option to strip HTML contents or just images from the content; actually I've modded the plugin to do so with: $content = pregreplace("/]+>/i", " ", $content); $content = striptags($content);
Awaiting from you.
Love this plugin!! There
Love this plugin!! There appears to be some issues with formatting content output between IE6 and IE7. Not sure if you're aware of this, but trying to syndicate a Technorati feed was causing issues with IE6, but not IE7. I just want to make you aware of this issue either for content formatting for future releases of the plugin. Thanks for all your hard work and time!

Hi RadGeek,
I have a question about your modified MagpieRSS parser.
Right now, the modifications allow you to grab the URL from an enclosure via $item['enclosure@url'].
However, what about attributes from an element with a colon?
eg:
How do we grab the URL or WIDTH value? I've tried $item['media']['thumbnail@url'] and $item['media'['thumbnail#1@url'] and they do not work.
I'm guessing some work will have to be done to the parser in order to make this work because of the colon.
A response would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for reading, -Ray

Hi there guys, back again.
I have another question for Rad, as I'm continuing shaping the plugin.
I'd like to manage slugs just before the post is stored, si I have added a filter in the function update(), just below the block:
if (FeedWordPress::needs_upgrade()) : // Will make duplicate posts if we don't hold off return NULL; endif;Just following I have coded the filter:
addfilter('wpinsertpostdata', 'myfunction', 0);But the function is never invoked.... did you prevent adding filters or did I code the add_filter in the wrong place?

Hi All,
I am desperate for help. The performance of my site has come to a screeching halt. Not sure what happened but the response times went from <2 seconds to ~10-15.
I have tried to use the GUID feature and optimize MySQL (add more resources, etc) to no avail.
It is clear that the queries against my database are doing massive full table scans which is just grinding down my install and is a pain to watch. I have approx 215k posts that all point back to the original site.
Anyone have code to create indices on the appropriate tables for (FWP) so I can get this site back online?
PLEASE HELP … I’m not a SQL guru so I’m more dangerous than anything right now. Any other tuning recommendations (explicit if possible would be great also)
Much appreciated.
More news on the duplicates
More news on the duplicates issue: It looks like some ill-beheaved sources will change the post GUID and the date of the post. This is why some duplicates are appearing. It looks like there's no way to avoid this....
Hermann, Yes, unfortunately
Hermann,
Yes, unfortunately if the source feed changes the GUID then by definition it is supposed to be treated as a distinct post from the post associated with the old GUID, and there's nothing FeedWordPress can really do about it. Also, it's worth keeping in mind that older versions of RSS did not include guids for items, so FeedWordPress has to make a guess based on some information that tends to stay relatively stable and to be relatively identifying (e.g. permalinks, creation date of the item, if that's available, etc.). But like any guesswork operation, this one can be fooled, especially if the feed producer goes around changing dates, titles, or permalinks.
I'm trying to speed up the
I'm trying to speed up the posting rate but it keeps thinking it doesn't need to update for another half hour per feed. There are settings like "ping and asap" but I don't get it.
I have full access to cron so is there a command I can schedule so that it runs every x minutes ... and what are the exact settings in the feed settings (global and per feed) to make this happen?
Somewhere I read about curl but it's not giving a clear example and isn't it better to run some php script instead of curl'ing the whole blog?
Please advise. I think someone else had posted problems with the timing as well.
Thanks, Peter

I've installed this plugin at my home locally on my computer and it works fine, updating feeds and such. However at work I installed it on a blog and it is installed exactly as I did at home, but for whatever reason it does not bring in any posts from the syndicated feeds. Everytime I update the feeds it says "Update complete. 0 new posts were syndicated and 0 existing posts were updated" This particular installation is hosted on our server, not locally. I also tried removing the plugin and doing a new install of it, but the feeds still do not update. Oddly though, when I add a new link to syndicate it will get example posts and I can add the feed, but they don't update.

Hermann,
In an earlier comment you said you coded a way to check for and delete duplicate posts. Can you share it?
az@your.gay.cat
Yes, very simple, I have
Yes, very simple, I have copied the code from an existing plugin, because it was unsure if working properly; you could try the FeedWordPress Duplicate Post Filter plugin first.
Otherwise this is the code:
in feedwordpress.phpfunction store () { global $wpdb;if ($this->filtered()) : // This should never happen. FeedWordPress::critical_bug('SyndicatedPost', $this, LINE); endif; /***** begin patch *********/ if (fwpdpf_check_duplicate ($this->post )) { $ret = false; return $ret; } /***** end patch *********/
Just before the end of the feedwordpress.php source, add the following:
function fwpdpf_check_duplicate ( $post ) { global $wpdb;// $handle = fopen("./duplicate_post_filter.log", "a+");
// fprintf($handle, "%s", "\nDiscarding this post:".$post['post_title'].": "); // fclose ($handle); return true; }
// fprintf($handle, "\nStoring this post in your database(EDT): %s", $escaped_dup_title); // fprintf($handle, "\n(DT): %s", $dup_title); // fprintf($handle, "%s", "DUP_QUERY:".$dup_query."\n"); // fprintf($handle, "%s", "RESULT_DUP:".$result_dup."\n"); // fprintf($handle, "%s", "Post title:".$post['post_title'].": ");
// fclose ($handle);
}
Basically the functions performs a test on: - post title - GUID - date
You can modify the code and other conditions if you like, you just need to modify the statement
$dup_query = place-your-conditions-hereBeware that this call slows down the process, you will need some testing.
P.S. - remove // for debugging purposes
hermann, might you be able to

FeedWordPress couldn't find any feeds
I'm running WPMU 2.7.1 as an intranet on a subdomain like http://blogs.company.com.
I'm using FeedWordPress 2009.0707 and have upgraded the rss.php and rss-functions.php scripts from this latest version.
I've always been able to syndicate public feeds originating outside of my company's firewall, but never feeds right in the same WPMU installation inside the company firewall.
So, for example, I can syndicate the ReadWriteWeb.com feed (a public site), but I can't syndicate anything at http://intranet.blogs.company.com (a private intranet) so that it displays on the main or root WPMU blog at http://blogs.pearson.com (the root blog of the private intranet).
Each time I upgrade, hoping that this problem will be fixed, I get something like the following:

Was there a fix for FWP not pulling in full posts?
Hi, thanks for the plugin, reminds me of WP O MATIC except that this one pulls in full posts via feeds.
I am on 2.8.3 with Magpie updated and am only getting excerpts from the site I am pulling feeds from.
Is this an issue with the plugin, config of site pulling the feed in, or maybe even something configured on the site I am pulling feeds from?
I am trying to pull in full posts from another one of my sites and am only getting excerpts.

Hi all
Been trying to get this working over the past few days, without any success sadly.
I'm able to create posts from a feed, but the formatting is all over the place. The feed I am trying to pull across is from Feedburner:

Unfortunately, the output is appearing as:
a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wjO9ZSr8ZTA/SnVHSifogNI/AAAAAAAAGZw/05VrjRXSESU/s1600-h/IMG_3874.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px machine 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 500px; height: 350px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wjO9ZSr8ZTA/SnVHSifogNI/AAAAAAAAGZw/05VrjRXSESU/s800/IMG_3874.JPG” alt=”" id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365272914904514770″ border=”0This is a completely fresh install with no other plugins and I've updated all files as per the documentation. Below is some info relating to my server:

PHP/5.2.8
libxml Version 2.7.3
WP 2.8.3
Would welcome any advice on what I should try next.
