Thaks for Feedwordpress 0.98. I've installed it in WP 2.0.1 and it pulls in some feeds just great. Hoever, it has problems with feeds from wordpress installations on Debian systems: e.g. it doesn't seem to recognize http://sspaeth.de/blog/wp-rss2.php as a feed (neither works with the atom/rss/rdf variants, although doesn't work on other computer with the same version of wordpress installed). Has anybody experience and is able to tell why it would have problems with these feeds? TIA, Sebastian

Thanks for a great plugin. I have been using this on http://akshargram.com/narad for aggregating posts from Hindi blog world. After the upgrade to 0.98. Update all feeds has become erratic. Sometimes it would update some of the feeds. Sometimes it would only update a single feed. I am not sure how to go about it. It would be great if you can throw some ideas why this would be happening.

I'm having problems upgrading on my larger sites.

The upgrade process generates an access denied error creating the temporary table, and subsequent errors trying to use that table.

It then appears to update most feeds, but some will fail with no error message - it simply stops processing any other feeds. eg:

• Fixing post meta-data for Mike Little's Journalized ...

and then the page stops loading.

Normally I can remove these and try again - it will then go through updating the other feeds ok. However it's extremely annoying when I have 100 feeds, most of which are failing.

The posts I get using this script are usually limited to maximum of around 140 characters. The rest of the information can only be seen at the contributor's site. Am I missing configuration somewhere or the default set by the contributor?

I think a great feature would be to be able to choose keywords for each syndication. If those keywords aren't present in the syndicated_item, don't display that post. Each feed should have it's own keywords. And if there are matching keywords, place the post in a particular category.

Getting permission denied with Cron job execution. How can one fix this?

Do you have experience on how to solve the following cron job error?

"Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: feedwordpress in /home/username/public_html/news/wp-content/update-feeds.php on line 152"

At first when executing cron job, I kept on receiving error messages from the server that certain files such as wp-settings.php is missing. (So each time, I copied those files to the wp-content directory to get rid of the errors. However, this time the error message points to line 152, which appears to be a blank line to me..)

A few things... * Is it possible to include/exclude items if certain conditions are met? ie, if the URL for an item in a feed is on a particular server or includes a particular string, don't include it. * How about tinkering with item content before it hits the page/database? ie. if an item summary contains a particular string, edit out the string.

I'm thinking perhaps I could use some custom fields on a per-contributor basis so that, if a certain pattern is matched in either the url or the content, the item is excluded.

It's the logic on doing the exclusion that I have no idea about. Does this happen in the update-feeds php?

Is there any reason why updating feed will always duplicate my previously last syndicated post again? Every time I run it, even if I only have one new item, I get two.

Hi, I am facing a dilemma. For the posts, I like the permalinks to link to content provider while give the users ability to comment on the post from my blog.

What happen is, comments can only be left when the permalink is points to my site. When permalink is set to original website, the "comment" link directs reader to original website, leaving no chance to add comments.

Can I modify this by changing where the link should be link to at the comment area?

First can I say what a fantastic piece of code this is.

Unfortunatley, I have a little problem with the plug-in.

It picks up and posts the RSS content fine. However, I went to add a link at the bottom of a post in the WP editor. This was fine in the Editor window and inserted a tag in the HTML code behind the GUI. All looked great in the Editor with the link shown on a new line.

However, when it displays on the page, there is no new line, and the text just continues. Looking at the code, the tags have been removed. Go back into the editor and the tags are there.

Any ideas as to why this should be. Manual posting works fine.

This plugin is great. I'm using it to set up a central class blog that pulls from student's individual blogs but I'm encountering a problem...

I have "don't create new categories and don't syndicate posts unless they match at least one familiar category" option clicked but it continues to pull in posts made to categories I don't have created in the class blog doing the pulling.

Anyone else having this issue?

Tried removing all feeds one at a time and then all of them and then testing one at a time but just get the same error each time. Using 1.5.1.3 wordpress version. Any ideas as to what it means.

I read somewhere in your notes on version 0.91 that the script actually generates an excerpt of the aggregated feed does not have one. Were can I get that to be the default output of the aggregator so that the published posts are only excerpts of the original post?

How about the user names coming from the names of the blog, rather than the names of the author in the feed?

Because the author name is different to the feed name, that's two different ways of identifying a poster.

Or is it possible to have the blog name show up in a post already?

If I understood the instructions correctly, FeedWordPress should create on the destination blog any categories housing posts syndicated from source blogs.

I have "create any categories the post is in" ticked for "Unfamiliar categories" under Options, but all the posts from 60 blogs are still only syndicated into Uncategorized.

Any advice on how to get over this from anyone please?

I'm seeing other odd things happening. When I update the feeds, some users are created multiple times over, and they only get a single post to their name.

Seems to relate to odd, non-English characters. For example, "Ffônlônluniau Nwdledig", which is the of the blog at http://moblog.co.uk/view.php?id=125594 (feed http://moblog.co.uk/rss.php?id=238).

Well, that's my hunch anyway.

If this is happening with the blog title, would it also be happening in, say, the post title or psot body? :(

i just found your plug-in. i gotta say, this is quite a fantastic piece of work! unfortunately, i've found a few bugs that make it a bit less usefull.

first, it doesn't not seem to grab the dates correctly (i'm using this with del.icio.us). they always default to Dec 1969 or something.

second, if you set it to "Permalinks point to:" the original website, it also changes the comment link. thus, you cannot leave a comments on a post any more because the URL then is broken.

How about including only the first N characters of an item?

Could overcome copyright issues concerning use of material.

I presume WordPress will let you output the first N items of a post, but the remainder would still be occupying the database.

I have a slightly different interest in the project. What I want to accomplish is to completely mirror current posts and commentary at a particular weblog, without updating past items if they are modified. Having new entries made would be OK when changes occur. So far, FeedWordPress is about as close a solution as I have seen, but the big things standing between what it is and what I want are: 1) incomplete posts/comments (it appears to store what comes across in the RSS feed and doesn't get the more extensive original text) and 2) updating of items when changes are found in the feed (I want a log of what each version was).

Any ideas? Should I be thinking of trying to modify FeedWordPress, or should I keep looking for other software solutions?

has anyone been able to get this plug-in to work with del.icio.us? this date & link bug is the only thing holding me back.

I've been looking at the feedwordpress.php file. I have, I think, turned off updating by commenting out the code in update_existing_post() and calling insert_new_post() instead at that point. But I still want to retrieve the full text of a post and insert that. What I would like to do is insert an exec call to an external script that will retrieve the source URL, parse it to get the content I want, and output a file with the parsed information. I was thinking that I could simply write a file with the URL to get from within add_post() or insert_new_post(), do the call, then read in the result, and modify what goes in the WP database based on that. But even though I put in code there to output a URL via a file, this has never happened. Meanwhile, the plugin is adding posts just as usual. I added a specific logging function that should show whenever add_post() or insert_new_post() are invoked. While posts are being added from the feeds normally, I have had no instances of the logfile reflecting that the program ever visits those functions.

On another matter, I am currently getting both the posts and comments RSS feed from one weblog. This means every comment that appears there becomes its own post. I'd like to instead have comments be added as comments to the relevant post on the weblog running FeedWordPress. Any ideas on that?

The error you got is the same as one i got after my host moved me to a different better server, just as i had upgraded to 2.02 and also feedwordpress 0.98. This server apparently turned out to have a different later apache and php build on it which kept giving error 403 and other problems, turned out i had to make a change in my htaccess files, got everthing working again and stable but just kept getting this 200 ok document moved page whenever i loaded up the update-feeds.php page. Alright if i logged in first and then went to the page but if i loaded the page first i got the 200 ok instead of the wordpress logon page.

Finally decided to do something about it after some googling found the answer.

Download your current pluggable-functions.php from the wp-includes folder.

Make a copy and save it somewhere so you can put it back if you need to.

Look for the line that describes the auth_redict function

Around line 212 in my editor.

function auth_redirect() Look for this line header('Location: ' . get_settings('siteurl') . '/wp-login.php?redirect_to=' . urlencode($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'])); and add this line afterwards header('Status: 301 Moved Permanently');

Just before the exit(); line.

YOu will now return the correct header and the admin page will load ok.

I have FIXED the problem of articles being dated 1969 or 1970. I'm running PHP 5.1.2 on my site, FWIW. The problem is that the parse_w3cdtf() function doesn't work -- it was returning -1 all the time.

In PHP5, you can replace this function with strtotime(). It's working for me, at least on an RSS feed with the date in $item['dc']['date'].

If you are having date problems with this plugin, use the plugin editor or otherwise edit feedwordpress.php and replace every instance of 'parse_w3cdtf' and '@parse_w3cdtf' with 'strtotime'.

I'm having trouble with Yahoo news feeds.. they have a redirect in the guid/permalink and when I import these feeds to my blog it breaks my rss feed due to invalid characters. I think it isn't properly escaping the url or something??

Is there any easy way to easily add a link to the permalink at the bottom of the article if I'm using the "permalinks point to my site" option? I want to have the individual pages for comments and such but still point to the original source. I tried modifying the script by hand and it was a mess. Hello! I've just started setting up a WordPress blog in the past few days. This plugin is what sold me on getting involved with this blog business. There is a problem though.

I'm running WordPress 2.0.3 + the WordPress 2.0.3 TuneUp plugin, but FeedWordPress still returns an error in the form of prompting me with an "Are You Sure?" dialog when I try to modify its options under the Options-->Syndication page. This isn't a big deal, I just hit Yes, but... the options don't get updated. I'd really like to be able to enable comments on syndicated posts, etc.

The plugin also fails to get updated when adding links from the Links-->Syndicated page. It does still pick up the feeds when I add a link from the Links-->Add Link page though.

Besides those minor bugs, there's one request I'd like to make. I'd really like for the option to have the tags from feeds get picked up by Ultimate Tag Warrior instead of assigned to equivalent categories. I'm trying use tags only and avoid the built-in categories system from the get-go.

In any case, thank you very, very much for this plugin. WordPress + FeedWordPress provides me with a solution I've wanted for a very long time.

I am nutty. Ultimate Tag Warrior allows for automatically converting categories to tags, so the tags are not an issue after all.

Only thing that's really broken then is the updating of the options.

Works great except for one bug: No categories are created.

I have 80 posts all uncategorized. I have tried with WP blogs, tagged posts, non-wp blogs. I have the correct option checked.

The database field for create_categories is Y

But I get no new cats. There's a post higher here with the same problem but I can't find a solution.

Similar to bdblogs comments, the "Syndication > Permalinks Point to" setting does not allow the headline to point to the original article while the comments point to the local site. It's either jump external for both or view both local. Any ideas how we can fix/hack this mod?

this plugin's support is not sufficient.... if you all are having issues. with commenting, permalink... etc.. i found this smartrss plugin from wp-plugins site...

it has worked fine for me. also when this plugin is deactivated all the redirected permalinks will get redirected to your blog... a big issue i am facing so i just let it activated and unsubcribed the feeds

i'm having more strange date issues. i did the fix above to fix the date bug. it worked. then i moved my install to a different folder. suddenly the date bug is back (all new posts are 1969). i'm not sure what to do now, sice the above fix has already been done. has something else changed somehow? i'm using the same database.

While the permalink for comments is small annoyance as well, my real problem is relative links in the body of the original articles get passed directly, so end up pointing to my own blog. In a future version could there be a way to specify to point relative links to the originating website?

I found a solution to the problem with relative links getting imported. It seems that FeedWordPress puts the proper absolute links in the main entry, and then saves the original data from the RSS feed as the post’s excerpt. This behavious makes sense when the RSS feed would only contain a short excerpt anyway and the reader would have to click on Read More to see the rest of the text. But for Last.fm journal entries, the whole post is included in the RSS. So the solution is to simply delete the excerpt. The links in the post are properly parsed. Weird, but it works.

I have a problem with the way the script assumes that feeds are valid xhtml. Google News definitely is not, but I cannot find a way to filter out the bad coding. If I comment out the lines that retain the feed in its original form I can get cleaner code, but then the opening on Google News is converted to an unclosed . I can find no way to remove the width=valign="top" code within the and no way to remove the invalid tags. Anyone know how to clean the feed content?

Hello Rad Geek, I just wanted to say a big thanks for FeedWordPress. I've been using it on http://singapura.isthereason.com (our community blog).

I was just wondering if there's a way to syndicate posts as excerpts on the blog. Ideally allowing the "read more" link to point to the original blogger's site.

I found this plugin more useful and customizable than SmartRSS, but it has its problems:

1. Links to source and comments being the same - I fixed it in a way similar to Draks.

2. Links are not computed correctly (actually, return "") when some RSS fields are missing from the feed, I fixed that too.

3. The main handicap now is that it does not recognize RSS 2.0 feeds (this must be the same problem Spaetz reported above).

4. From the design point of view: categories are ascribed to links by their NAME rather than by their ID, which is a pain if you just want to rename a category: you have to edit the comment field of each link ascribed to the old category, one by one. A pain.

5. If incoming feeds are not attributed to categories, they create their own, which may be a mess. It would be nice to have a plugin doing category reattribution or redirection on the fly (rather than changing it in the database). Eg, if a category "Mac" appears automatically, you'd like to reattribute it to "Macintosh", and any future feed coming into the "Mac" category would appear to be in the "Macintosh" one. In the category list, "Mac" wouldn't appear anymore.

ok so I got this to work ok on one wordpress install and not on another the only thing I can figure is that blogs located at a folder level cannot have their RSS feeds grabbed. eg

both work, any solutions? I would hate to have to tell a friend to move their WP install.

When permalinks points to original website AND using either: - Customizable Comment Listings plugin or - Recent Comments plugin

FeedWordPress messes the links to comments up (typically used in the sidebar). Instead of linking to the latest comment(s), linking goes to original posts from feeds...

Tried to use Point to this webside along with Draks hack to have some link to original post - but the hack adds nothing to the posts (wp 2.04). ??

I installed the FeedWordPress from Rad Geek and it is working fairly well in WP 2.0.4.

However, I have a big problem accurately displaying content from the syndicated feeds when using the following variable:

the_syndication_source_link()

The problem is that only SOME syndicated sources show their source, but others do not.

At first I thought it had to do with the type of RSS/Atom/RDF I was using from those syndicated sites, so now I made sure that on all the sites, I am only using RSS 2.0. On some sites, the source shows, no problem. But others, it shows no source. Any idea why?!

when using variables like "the_syndication_permalink()", it works fine ALL the time... only "the_syndication_source_link()" is proving problematic....

After installing Dagon Design Sitemap Generator v2.6 and trying to update site with FeedWordPress (which was previously working) I receive the following message:

Error: I don't syndicate tag:radgeek.com/projects/feedwordpress/abc123

abc123 is the "XML-RPC update secret word"

So the blog is basically un-updatable.

Any help?

Error message is generated by the FeedWordPress plugin as I located the line in the code:

My installation of FeedWordPress seems able to capture some titles of syndicated blogs, but not others. Any ides why and how to make it always collect the name?

We managed to get feedwordpress to work under wpmu.

However, like on http://www.hutchison.org/allen/2006/02/02/mass-delete-posts-from-wordpress/ your plugin causes the need to be able to bulk delete posts.

This plugin doesn't seem to work with my DreamHost websites. Has anyone modified this to use CURL instead of fopen()?

The plugin works great, but I would like any pics inside the feeds to be on the right side of the feed. Can anyone show me where to make the changes?

1) Any chance of a filter so we can filter the posts before they get syndicated? 2) Syndicated entries have "Comments off" written next to them, but that's not necessarily true if the post came from another site - in this case the "comments" link should link back to the original site.

Recenly is not posible to read feed from Wordpress MU. Says: no feed found but in firefox and Safari reads normaly the Feed generate by Wordpress MU.

Is anyone else having trouble with FeedWordPress only pulling titles from the Blogger feeds since Blogger has updated?

It use to pull in blogger feeds just fine, but I noticed when people started using the blogger beta that it would only pull headlines...

I cant get this to pull in data from the feed. I am trying to use the manual update button, but nothing happens. Any documentation?

My copy of FeedWordPress is not accepting changes I save to settings.

I specify the title of an incoming feed and that should then be used for all incoming items from that feed - but it isn't; the system just uses the original.

Back in settings, my changes are lost every time.

Any idea how to solve this please?

Development appears to have slowed due to other commitments. Any chance of us forming a Google Group or something to distribute support/development perhaps?

It's a pain in the rear having to go in and modify each of my incoming items all the time.

Greetings .. Does this work with wordpress 2.1? I've been trying to get it to work (v0.98) with the "fix" according to TRENT as indicated as the patch on the codex pages .. but I am getting this error message (in Options/Syndication)

It will not update for new entries.
